On Tuesday, 10 February 2015, GONTRAN CHERRIER LIMITÉ（ゴントラン シェリエ リミテ） opened inside Marui City Shibuya — a time-limited shop from French boulanger Gontran Cherrier’s GONTRAN CHERRIER line. Where standard Cherrier counters sold round buns and familiar shapes, LIMITÉ introduced an unpublished “cube” concept: Cube de Pain（キューヴ・ド・パン）, plus square versions of bun sandwiches and cream puffs that had previously been round.
What “cube world” meant on the menu
LIMITÉ’s hook was geometry. Classic Cherrier items returned, but re-cut into cubes for display, packing, and bite-sized eating. The reporter ordered three headline pieces:
- Brioche (Banana) — brioche dough with banana kneaded in, topped with coconut (¥200)
- Ebi Mayo — cube with rucola in the dough, filled with shrimp mayo wrapped in bacon (¥200)
- Matcha Chou à la Crème — matcha cream puff, not overly sweet, rich enough for a small hunger (¥230)
She added the lunch set: mini salad or soup plus a drink for +¥400 (11:00–14:00), choosing vegetable-heavy clam chowder as the soup.
How cube bread eats in practice
You could bite straight into a cube, but the shop provided knife and fork — useful for seeing cross-sections. The ebi mayo filling photographed like architecture: refined flavor, tidy shape, easy to carry. Matcha chou worked as a between-meals sweet.
Beyond the cube line, the case held Pain au Chocolat (¥240), Squid Ink Bun Sandwich (¥400), Curry Bun Sandwich (¥400), and other meal-to-dessert options — enough range for a quick Shibuya stop or a deliberate tasting run.
Marui City Shibuya placement
The shop occupied 1–2F at 1-21-3 Jinnan, Shibuya — inside the Marui City complex near the south side of the district. Sixty-six seats. Hours ran from 8:00 on weekends and holidays, otherwise from 10:00, until 21:00, with irregular closing days.
Marui City sits close enough to Shibuya Station that bakery traffic overlaps with scramble-bound commuters. A Shibuya Crossing live view captures the wider basin; a cube-bread pop-up was one more reason people paused before crossing back into the flow.
